Wisconsin SMR 58 cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a renowned heirloom pickling variety released by the University of Wisconsin in 1959. “SMR” means Scab and Mosaic Resistant, reflecting its groundbreaking resistance to two of the era’s most damaging cucumber diseases. Widely regarded as one of the most productive and dependable non-hybrid pickling cucumbers ever developed, it produces fruit about 2 1/2 inches wide and 5–6 inches long at maturity. Vigorous, multi-branched climbing vines spread 4–6 ft. The cucumbers are exceptionally crisp, sweet, and mild, with low bitterness that allows them to absorb brines and dill spices while retaining their texture.
Germination: 6-10 days
Maturity: 55-60 days after Transplanting
Species: Cucumis sativus
Quantity: 20 Premium Heirloom Seeds
Appearance: Produces long, slightly club-shaped fruit with smooth, glossy, deep-purple skin. At maturity, fruit measures approximately 8-10 inches long and 2-3 inches wide.
Flavor & Uses: Mild, sweet, and tender, with creamy-white flesh, few seeds, and little bitterness. The thin skin and slender shape make it well suited for grilling, frying, roasting, baking, slicing, and layered dishes.
Growth Habit: Vigorous, upright, bushy plants typically reach 2-3 ft. and produce abundantly throughout the warm season. Stakes or cages can support branches heavy with fruit.
Growing Notes: Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost. Transplant after frost danger has passed and the soil is warm. Grow in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, keeping moisture consistent. For the best flavor and texture, harvest while the skin remains glossy.
