Sugar Baby is a popular compact “icebox” heirloom watermelon that produces sweet, round fruit weighing 6–12 pounds. Its small-size fits easily in a standard refrigerator. The dark green-black rind surrounds bright red, fine-textured flesh with small seeds. The fruit is exceptionally sweet and crisp.
Germination: 3–10 days
Maturity: 75–85 days after Transplanting
Genus: Citrullus lanatus
Seed Count: 25 Premium Heirloom Seeds
Appearance: Produces round to oblong melons with a glossy, dark blue-green to nearly black rind and bright red flesh.
Flavor & Uses: Exceptionally sweet, crisp, and juicy—ideal for fresh slices, fruit salads, picnics, and cookouts.
Growth Habit: A vigorous, sprawling vine with long runners that needs ample garden space.
Growing Notes: Start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost or sow them 1-inch-deep outdoors after frost once the soil is warm. Plant in full sun and rich, well-draining soil, leaving plenty of room for vines. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially while fruit develops.
Harvest Note: Harvest when the tendril closest to the fruit turns brown, the ground spot becomes creamy yellow, and the rind appears dull.
