National Pickling Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is an iconic heirloom vine developed by the National Pickle Packers Association and released in 1924. Bred for canning, its slightly tapered, blocky fruit fits neatly into jars. Its exceptional flavor and thin, tender skin readily absorb brines and pickling spices. The vigorous vines grow 4–5 ft. and offer high resistance to Cucumber Mosaic Virus and Scab. Fruit reaches 5–6 inches at maturity but may be harvested smaller.
Germination: 3-10 days
Maturity: 50-55 days after Transplanting
Species: Cucumis sativus
Quantity: 20 Premium Heirloom Seeds
Appearance: Produces long, slightly club-shaped fruit with smooth, glossy, deep-purple skin. Mature fruit measures about 8–10 inches long and 2–3 inches wide.
Flavor & Uses: Mild, sweet, and tender, with creamy-white flesh, few seeds, and minimal bitterness. Its thin skin and slender shape are ideal for grilling, frying, roasting, baking, slicing, and layered dishes.
Growth Habit: Vigorous, upright, bushy plants typically grow 2–3 ft. tall and produce heavily throughout the warm season. Staking or caging helps support fruit-laden branches.
Growing Notes: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost. Transplant once frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. Plant in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil; maintain consistent moisture. Harvest while the skin is glossy for the best flavor and texture.
