Introduced in the 1930s, Dixie Queen is a classic heirloom watermelon with a pale silver-green rind, dark green stripes, crisp bright red flesh, and small-to-medium seeds. Round to slightly oblong, fruits typically weigh 20–40 pounds, though historical descriptions report up to 60 pounds under ideal conditions. Its rich, old-fashioned flavor is very sweet, and its thin yet remarkably tough rind historically made it an excellent market shipper. For fast, reliable sprouting, maintain a temperature of 75°F–90°F.
Germination: 3–12 days
Maturity: 80–90 days after Transplanting
Genus: Citrullus lanatus
Quantity: 25 Premium Heirloom Seeds
Appearance: Round to slightly oblong fruit with a pale silver-green rind, dark green stripes, and crisp bright red flesh; typically weighs 20–40 pounds.
Flavor & Uses: Very sweet, crisp, and juicy with a rich, old-fashioned watermelon flavor; ideal for fresh eating, fruit salads, and summer refreshments.
Growth Habit: Vigorous, sprawling vines produce large melons and require ample room to grow.
Growing Notes: Start seeds 3 to 4 weeks before your last spring frost date. Do not start them too early because large seedlings transplant poorly. Plant 1 inch deep, 6–8 hours of full sun and rich, well-draining soil. Space plants generously keep the soil evenly moist and avoid disturbing the roots when transplanting.
Harvest Note: Harvest when the tendril nearest the fruit has dried, the ground spot turns creamy yellow, and the rind appears dull. Cut the stem rather than pulling the melon from the vine.
